Hindsight is 2020: Monster Naps

Looking back to those moments with my second baby (then 4-5 months old, there were times that I would allow her to take these monster naps (3-4 hours) during the day instead of waking her after 2 hours so that she would still take her other naps and not wake a bunch of times during the night. It’s always better to have more consistent day time naps at that age than 2 short and 1 long nap. You can cap each of the first 2 naps of the day at 1.5-2 hours each, and then have a shorter 3rd nap of 45 min-1 hour, or you can have 3, 1.5 hour naps.

What I wouldn’t have given to know this info now! So many difficult nights of restless sleep since she would sleep too long in one stretch during the day.

Make sure you’re tracking your baby’s waketime length as well. Make sure he/she isn’t staying awake longer than 1.5 hours at 4 months old. The dreaded 4 month sleep regression can be avoided by keeping the waketime length shorter and making sure that baby is connecting those sleep cycles (if they aren’t taking monster naps).

What was the most difficult moment when your baby was 4 months old?
